5 ways to secure a warehouse or distribution centre

clip_image002

Warehouses and distribution centres are a common target for burglary and theft, both internally and externally. This is in no small part down to the high quantities of valuable goods that are housed inside warehouses, often with original packaging which means that criminals can obtain a profitable sell-on price. Here are five robust ways that security can be improved.

1 – Access control
By using access control equipment you can limit access to items of a particularly high value, securing them with cages and providing keypad entry, card readers or even biometric fingerprint readers. You should also install CCTV and insist on a “two-person” rule, with no worker ever allowed to be left alone inside a cage, reducing the risk of internal theft.

2 – Automatic rising kerbs
A common way for thieves to escape after a burglary is by vehicle. A good plan to stop unauthorised vehicular access is to install an Automatic Rising Kerb. Gateway’s GA8000 utilises high quality hydraulic technology to provide ultimate security against HGV’s. It can also be used to prevent employee’s personal vehicles from being driven into shipping and receiving areas.

3 – Gates
One of the strongest physical deterrents that you can put in place to ward off criminals is a gate. Here at Gateway we provide three key types of gates which include swing gates, sliding gates and bi-folding gates.

4 – Turnstiles
Another good way to monitor who is coming and going from your warehouse or distribution site is to install full-height or waist-height turnstiles. This can eliminate the chances of tailgating – a popular method used to gain access to a restricted site.

5 – Barriers
Warehouses and distribution centres are likely to experience lots of traffic with high numbers of vehicles visiting the site throughout the day. However it is important that access is controlled, so you are able to keep records of who is visiting your site, as well as making sure that entry is permitted, for example by checking the identification of drivers before allowing them to gain entry. Gateway’s fully automatic barriers are a perfect solution for controlling entry and they can be controlled via push-buttons, tokens, proximity cards, CCTV or by on-site security guards. For a more cost effective solution manual barriers are also available.

Gateway Automation can help owners of warehouses and distribution centres to develop a 360 security strategy for their sites. We provide free, no-obligation quotations and feasibility surveys in order to find the best solution to security needs. Maintaining rapid access to hospitals, police and fire stations

clip_image002

When it comes to dealing with emergencies every second counts and the time it takes for an emergency vehicle to enter and exit their site can be either a help or a hindrance to improving response times. This is why it is important for emergency services to make an informed decision when it comes to which type of security gate they have installed on their premises.

When choosing a gate for a police station, hospital or fire station it’s vital to consider not only how fast your gate will open but also how quickly it will close, ensuring that access is protected.

Here at Gateway, our purpose built GA9500 bi-folding trackless speed gates are the perfect solution for sites that require rapid access.

The GA9500 bi-folding trackless speed gate can open and close at more than twice the speed of a traditional swinging gate, cutting down response times and maintaining safety.

These gates are manufactured from sturdy RHS steel frames and have CHS tubular steel infills (which can be swapped for timber or louvre) and they can also be fitted with spiked tops, warning lights, sirens and razor wire, depending on the requirements of the site.

For a full run down of specifications please visit our product page: http://www.gatewayautomation.co.uk/gates/bi-folding-speed-gates/ga9500-bi-folding-trackless-speed-gate/. We also provide a range of other gates including automatic swing gates, cantilever sliding gates and manual swing gates which can be viewed on our website.

Gateway helps Lincoln Council tackle anti-social behaviour

imageGateway Automation is pleased to have installed two new traffic barriers at a popular Lincoln country park. City of Lincoln Council recently awarded a contract to Gateway which has seen security measures ramped up at Hartsholme Park in a coordinated effort to reduce anti-social behaviour there.

Newly installed barriers will now prevent unauthorised vehicular access to Hartsholme Park. Work was carried out on the 17th and 18th of March.

Gateway has installed two barriers, including a rising barrier on the inbound carriageway with keypad access. Traffic is now also being controlled through the use of flow control plates, allowing cars to travel out but not in by the same route.

Hartsholme Country Park is three miles out of Lincoln city centre, covers over 200 acres of land and is a popular area for dog walkers, cyclists and children to enjoy. The new security measures will mean access will be restricted during night time, with the park closing at 8pm during the winter and 10pm during the summer months, opening again throughout the year at 6am.

How crime is affecting SMEs

clip_image002A recent study has revealed that over half of small to medium sized UK businesses have been targeted by crime. The research was commissioned by Victim Support and the security firm ADT and it found that crime was costing these businesses £2,625 on average for each incident and has collectively cost SMEs £25m.

The study found that criminals have been repeatedly targeting SMEs which has led to numerous days where they have been unable to trade.

Gail Hunter, a spokesperson at ADT, said: “This new research shows the shocking scale and impact that crime can have on small and medium businesses and disappointingly, the figures show that there is a strong possibility that it could happen again.

Our aim is to help prevent crime and give business owners and their staff peace of mind. We advise business owners to take proactive steps to help protect their businesses and livelihoods.”

There are many solutions that you can implement to secure your business premises against crime and this study further emphasises the importance of doing so. Criminals are constantly looking for new ways of breaking into your property and will target the weakest point. Therefore conducting a risk assessment and then addressing any vulnerable areas highlighted will go a long way towards strengthening your premises’ security.

Whether your business operates from commercial, industrial or retail premises, Gateway Automation provides a variety of security solutions and can provide you with a free, no obligation quotation and feasibility survey to assess your security requirements. Biometrics: a secure and reliable way to control access

clip_image001Biometrics is a term used to describe unique physiological characteristics such as fingerprints, DNA or the iris which can be used to identify an individual. These attributes can be used to authorise access to an individual and the technology involved in doing so provides one of the most secure access control methods.

Biometric identification is more secure and reliable than password, PIN, ID cards or fob based authorisation because the individual has to be physically present at the time. This prevents an individual from stealing the code or implement used to gain access to a restricted area. Using biometric identification also removes the need for individuals to remember passwords or PIN numbers and eliminates the need to replace cards or fobs when one is lost or staff leave the company. This also means that biometric identification is a more cost effective method of granting access because individuals can be easily added or removed from the system.

The FR-240 Biometric Fingerprint Reader provides a secure and reliable way to control access to restricted areas. Every fingerprint is unique and is defined by a series of ridges and channels on the surface of the finger. Even as the individual ages their fingerprint will remain the same. The fingerprints of individuals you wish to give authorisation to will be registered to the device and when their fingerprint is presented to the device they will be granted access. The FR-240 comes with a remote control to program the device and easy to follow instructions to ensure the management of your access control system is as simple as possible.

If your business needs to control access to restricted areas, Gateway Automation can assess your requirements and provide you with a free, no-obligation quotation and feasibility survey. Block Unwanted Vehicle Access with Rising Kerbs

clip_image002What is clear in today’s world of highly organised and well equipped criminals is that securing your businesses premises is paramount. Criminal gangs will look for property that has the potential to house high value assets but is poorly defended so it is important you risk assess your premises and address the areas of weakness.

Blocking vehicle access points in the form of an automatic rising kerb is an ideal first line of defence. The GA8000 Automatic Rising Kerb is a tough and reliable method that will prevent a vehicle from accessing your premises. It acts as a visible deterrent with its yellow and black stripes and imposing height while its strength, height and width provides an un-compromising solution that prevents unwanted vehicle access.

The GA8000 is available in half-width sizes from 2 – 5 metres and at a height 340mm, 500mm or 800mm depending on your security requirements. At 340mm high the automatic rising kerb will effectively stop cars and vans, the 500mm high version will provide more security and to stop the biggest HGV’s the 800mm high version is recommended.

A state of the art programmable logic controller that controls the hydraulics and other access control equipment such as traffic lights allows the GA8000 to be used in manned or unmanned vehicle access points. This automatic rising bollard can be deployed quickly and if an unwanted vehicle does attempt to gain access by ramming the obstacle, it is virtually impossible to breach which is why they are an ideal first line of defence.

If your business premises has vehicle access points which need to be more secure, Gateway Automation can provide you with a free, no-obligation quotation and feasibility survey to assess your requirements.
